“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” — Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Seth Grahame-Smith catalyzed the classic literature/monster mash-up trend in 2009 with his debut novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Drawing from Jane Austen’s original text and expanding upon the story, he cursed Regency England with a zombie plague to create a stunning international bestseller. Austen heroine Elizabeth Bennet fights the undead—in a corset, no less—and still finds time for verbal sparring with the iconic Mr. Darcy.
PPZ has gone on to sell over two million copies to date, and a film adaptation of the novel hits theaters this Friday. Staring Lily James (
Downton Abbey, Cinderella) as Elizabeth Bennet and Sam Riley (
Maleficent) as Mr. Darcy, the movie promises to deliver Austen’s timeless love story against a a backdrop of violence and gore.
