With stand-up sets from names like John Mulaney, Ali Wong and Hannah Gadsby generating all sorts of buzz, Netflix is looking to step up their comedy game in a big way lately. In 2019, the streaming platform will debut a massive stand-up series featuring 47 comedians from 13 regions worldwide. The event will draw from a number of half-hour sets, many of which will be recorded at Montreal’s Just for Laughs comedy festival. Acts include Nicole Byer, Deanne Smith, Nick Swardson, Neil Brennan, Chris D’Elia and many more from countries all over the world.
According to a press release from Netflix, “The groundbreaking event series (title to be announced) will feature a range of stand-up specials from comedians diverse in style, gender, and ethnicity and will tape in seven languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Dutch, German and English). Stand-up fans around the world can celebrate as they discover their new favorite comedians, with all episodes launching at once.”
“Few things are better than discovering a new comedian you love,” said Lisa Nishimura, the company’s VP of Original Documentary and Comedy. “With this event, we’re creating a true comedy festival experience for our members where they can scour the globe from home to find some of the freshest voices in comedy.”
The Just for Laughs lineup will tape their performances during the festival, which runs from July 24-29 in Montreal. Additional sets will be taped in São Paulo, Mexico City, Mumbai, Berlin and Amsterdam, with comedian names to be announced.
