I don’t know if The Big Sick is the hit of the summer. Are people paying to see it? I have no idea. I hope so, I guess? To the extent that I hope people support good stuff with actual money. I do know the earnest rom-com is the best comedy I’ve seen this summer, and maybe this year, and that a lot of that has to do with the sheer likability of its cast.
That cast, which includes Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Aidy Bryant, Kurt Braunohler and Ray Romano, did a promotional stand-up tour earlier this year, along with the movie’s producer Judd Apatow and co-writer Emily V. Gordon, who is also Nanjiani’s wife and the basis for Kazan’s character. Amazon Studios has slapped together a little highlight reel of that tour, and posted it up on YouTube, and you can see the thing right now at the bottom of this post. Hopefully you already clicked play. Hopefully you clicked play without even reading these words.
If you haven’t seen the movie, and appreciate sweet romantic comedies, or humorous looks at the struggles of immigrants assimilating to America, or movies where Holly Hunter completely goes off on some unsuspecting dillweed, give it a shot. Definitely watch it if you’ve fantasized about Kumail Nanjiani wearing a Swingin’ Medallions t-shirt. But watch that video below first, or after, or just whenever. Your life is your own. (We first saw this on Splitsider, by the way.)
