Engaging and good-natured, comedian Tom Papa is finishing up the year right with his second hour-long Netflix special, What A Day!, out on December 13.
The New Jersey comic began doing stand-up in the early 1990s, graduating to bit film roles (The Informant!) and, like most performers these days, hosting a podcast—in his case, Breaking Bread with Tom Papa (and yes, he does actually bake bread). His first hour on Netflix, You’re Doing Great!, earned praise from Paste contributor Julie Mitchell for his ability to present “an unexpected idea coded with a relatable delivery, written in the best possible words.”
Papa’s new stand-up special, filmed at the Wilbur Theater in Boston, promises to find that same delicate balance between older sensibilities and a newer ethos. What A Day! touches on parenthood, his marriage, his pet pug, and feeling tethered to modern technology. The special is directed by Greg Jacobs (the director of none other than Magic Mike XXL, though I doubt this hour is quite as racy) and executive producers include Papa, Brian Volk-Weiss, and Cisco Henson.
