The Best Comic Book Covers of 2016

Looking back at our favorite comic covers of 2015, the overall conclusion is that the last 12 months weren’t afraid to get weird. And that’s OK—it was a weird year. Infographics, negative space, Swiss design and limited color palettes took to the fore. If previous years marked new strides forward in materials and styles, 2016 confirmed that progress as a reality that’s seeped into every crevice of the comic industry.

Mike Del Mundo continues to produce art that could be framed in a Madrid museum (Vision #7 FTW) while Paste favorites David Aja and Becky Cloonan did stellar work, respectively, on Scarlet Witch and Shade the Changing Girl. But in this new grand realm of postmodernism, Nick Derington crafted one of the most memorable, Warholian new covers to one of the most memorable new series by portraying a sole gyro for Doom Patrol #1 (it makes sense if you read the issue). Elsewhere, another of our favorite artists of the year, Ian Bertram, haunted our dreams with a litany of morbid icons/portraits in House of Penance. Other standouts include Mike Mignola, Wes Craig and Declan Shalvey.
