Milestones dominated this month’s best covers, from Adventure Time’s swan song to DC Comics’ celebration of all things Superman for Action Comics #1000, both of which claimed multiple spots in our gallery. Once we get past the “A” column, an even clearer narrative emerges: some of the best cover art published today comes from variant programs. DC Comics, BOOM! Studios, Image Comics—every major publisher is lining up talented artists to take risks on alternate covers, from Peter Bagge’s limb-bending Quantum & Woody #5 to Gabriel Hernández Walta’s “Cosmic Redneck” cover for Redneck, which boldly pokes fun at one of writer Donny Cates’ other projects. Readers who stick to primary covers aren’t getting screwed over though, thanks to artists like Hayden Sherman (Cold War), Michael Avon Oeming (Cave Carson Has an Interstellar Eye) and Sloane Leong (Prism Stalker). But enough about the business of covers—click on through to actually see April’s beauties for yourself.
