Iconic—there’s no better word to describe the finest comic covers of March 2019. Entry after entry in this month’s cover gallery feels monumental, like it fundamentally captures the sum total of the characters, series or even publisher it represents. From Evan Shaner’s rainbow-hued Young Justice group portrait to Chip Zdarsky’s evocative, monochromatic Spider-Man: Life Story #1, Dave Johnson’s starkly shadowed Dark Knight to Sana Takeda’s luminescent Bêlit, these images captures something almost intangible about their subjects. Even newer stars get the larger-than-life treatment, as in Wes Craig’s nearly feral Deadly Class #37 cover, or both Joe Quinones’ and Nick Derington’s Dial H for Hero #1 images, each capturing the boundless potential of that title through totally different approaches. March can often feel like a gloomy, dull month—a challenge to be overcome between the holidays and long-awaited spring. Let this month’s batch of covers provide a much-needed lift before the flowers finally bloom.
