The Best Comic Book Covers of May 2018

Who could have guessed that a five-Wednesday month would produce so many drool-worthy covers? The theme of May, if there’s one to be found across these diverse examples of graphic goodness, is absolutely repeat offenders. We here at Paste scour every week’s covers and variant covers, yet somehow names keep recurring. Michael Cho makes a grand entrance on Captain America with covers that play in contrasts: Steve Rogers’ classic look set in ageless granite against a hyper-futuristic sky; Cap’s inspiring bravery cast over a new shield-bearer’s hectic escape. Greg Smallwood stays within the spooky lane for both of his May appearances, but manages to excel at both the “ominous supernatural terror” and “violent body horror” sides of the spectrum. Alex Ross does what Alex Ross does best on two Marvel milestone issues: expertly painted iconic poses. Beyond our double-dippers, Sonny Liew continues to break the mold on Eternity Girl; Jim Rugg uses dynamic lighting to arrest the (black) eye; Scott Koblish fits more Deadpools into one image than God or science ever intended; Wes Craig stuns in just black, white and coral; Fiona Staples nails the beginning-of-summer vibe; and Steve Skroce perfectly captures how we feel looking at all of this glory. Good luck next month, June—you’ve got a lot to live up to.
