May doesn’t feel like a red month—after all, we associate the season with a transition to warmer weather, the blooming of flowers and fresh rain (if you live on the northern half of the globe, anyway). Despite that, this cover gallery proves that red often wins out when competing for eyes on comic shelves. From the bright orange-red of Chris Visions’ Coda #12 to the carefully applied pops of scarlet on Julian Totino Tedesco’s Daredevil #6, the bloody splash of Hannah Templar’s Forgotten Queen #4 to the evocative transit placement of Sam Lotfi’s Last Stop on the Red Line #1, May is red, red, red. Haydan Sherman uses it, Jenny Frison uses it, Viktor Kalvachev uses it and depending on how flexible you want to define “red”—a burgundy, perhaps?—Tiffany Turrill uses it. There were other paths to getting our attention this month, like Andrea Sorrentono’s clockwork precision or Liam Sharp’s emerald sci-fi delirium, but for May, it seems that red is where it’s at.
