You’d think that our October cover roundup would be dominated by creepy art—we’re certainly fans of it around these parts—but if any trend wins out this month, it’s DC Comics’ foil resurgence. While the gimmick might be wink-and-nod nostalgia bait, the monochromatic results frequently stun—especially Julian Totino Tedesco’s dual entries, each of which perfectly captures its subject using a restricted palette. Steve Rude’s classic Superman portrait on the cover of Action Comics #1004 similarly impresses, feeling as wholesome as a warm slice of apple pie. Some spookiness does creep in— coulrophobes beware Vanessa R. Del Rey’s Ice Cream Man variant—but October is represented best by nods to feminist art icons, a gorgeous Sandman repackage that somehow stands among the great many iconic former covers in the series, and not one, but two adorable pet dinosaurs. Halloween devotees can rest assured we ended our 31-item list with something rightfully witchy, though, so be sure to click all the way through to the end.
