As if to greet the new summer season, the best comic covers of June run in red, orange and yellows, with more than a few examples dousing that scorching palette with wet textures and water colors. It’s almost eerie: all but four of the covers sport very, very similar color profiles. Karl Kerschl goes for a strikingly intimate shot of scarlet speedster Barry Allen for Joshua Williamson’s new Flash run, Reilly Brown frames the Marvel U’s infamous vigilante through Daredevil’s crimson sonar and Wes Craig contrasts a thick river of blood against a foreboding black background. A shade lighter, Paul Azaceta (Outcast), Robbi Rodriguez (Spider-Gwen) and Kevin Zeigler (The Tomorrows) all confirm that pink is making a cross-media comeback.
On the process and textural side, Sharlene Kindt continues the form-is-function water coloring of Dept. H, a narrative set in the murky depths of the sea while Jesse Reklaw’s LOVF uses that same technique for far more surreal ends. And don’t even get us started on Mike Del Mundo’s tidal wave of awesome for Carnage. Check out the rest of the gallery for our favorite comic covers of June.
