We’re still half a month from the first day of summer, but the comic artist community is channeling the burnt, auburn hues of a lingering sun on its best covers…even when they take place undersea or, um, in hell. Ian Bertram erects a haunted gunslinger against the solar system’s largest star in House of Penance #2, Garry Brown frames a sunset safari in The Massive: Ninth Wave #6 and even Ryan Sook captures Superman peaking at a cresting solar beam over the earth’s contour. It’s enough to slather on the SPF 100 already.
Elsewhere, warrior poet Simon Bisley captures the Alpha King essence of splatter-house excess inspired by fine beer, Jenny Frison plays with decaying fabric textures in Revival and David Aja combines MC Escher disorientation with Rubik’s Cube splendor in Karnak. Check out our favorite comic book covers of May above.
