Every summer since 1986, hippies across the country have flocked to Nevada for a week to hang out, look at art and simply have fun. The organizers literally build a small city for the week, and there is typically no money spent while there—attendees barter crafted items and goodwill instead. At the end of the festival, everyone gathers to watch a giant wooden man, several stories tall, as it’s set on fire and burned to the ground; a spectacular sight to see out in the barren desert.
Burning Man is intended to be a place of safe and uninhibited self-expression—we rounded up our favorite costumes in the gallery above. What will you wear next year?
