It’s almost 2017. Whether you’re celebrating 2016’s demise or all the awesome things 2017 has in store (or both), we’re sure those celebrations are sure to involve a drink (or 10). If you’re trying to decide what to sip on during your celebration, we’ve come up with a list of some great drinks to kick the night off with a little caffeine, as well as a few to enjoy while the party is going on.
Not only is January 1st New Year’s day, it’s also National Bloody Mary Day (go figure). So we’ve also got an awesome recipe for one of those for you to have on hand in the morning when the New Year officially kicks off along with your hangover.
Red Star Tavern – Portland, Oregon
From lead bartender, Brandon Lockman
1 oz. High West Prairie Bourbon
2 oz. cold brew coffee
.75 oz. Imbue Petal & Thorn
.5 oz. salted maple syrup
Directions: Stir first four ingredients with ice and strain into a footed rocks glass; top with heavy cream and garnish with coffee grounds.
Bacchus Bar – Portland, Oregon
From bartender, Bryan Galligos
1.5 oz. Plantation Rum
1.5 oz. cold brew coffee
.75 oz. Dry Curacao
.25 oz. Fernet Branca Mente
Directions: Add all ingredients to shaker tin. Shake with ice, strain into rocks glass and garnish with espresso sugar.
Drinks To Sip on as You Close in on Midnight
1.5 oz. Ketel One Vodka
1 oz. fresh pressed apple cider
0.5 oz. fresh lemon juice
0.75 oz. cinnamon simple syrup*
2-3 dashes aromatic bitters
Egg white (optional)
Directions: Combine first six ingredients in a mixing glass and dry shake for 30 seconds. Add ice and shake again. Strain into a mason jar filled with ice. Top with ginger beer. Garnish with freshly grated nutmeg and a red apple slice.
*Cinnamon Simple Syrup: 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, 2 cinnamon sticks. Bring water and sugar to a boil, add cinnamon sticks, remove from heat, cool.
A twist on the traditional champagne toast, the Stroke of Midnight is the perfect cocktail to ring in the New Year.
1 oz. Cointreau
1/4 oz. Grenadine
4 oz. Champagne
Directions: Pour Cointreau and grenadine into a champagne flute. Top with champagne.
Garnish with an orange twist.
For The Morning After
2 parts EFFEN Cucumber Vodka
4 parts Tomato Juice
2 Basil Leaves (torn)
¾ part Bloody Mary Seasoning
Directions: Build ingredients in order listed and shake. Pour into a serving glass with ice. Garnish with cucumber and basil leaf.
