Eidos Montreal Reportedly Working on Guardians of the Galaxy Game Instead of Next Deus Ex

According to a Eurogamer report, developers Eidos Montreal have paused their work on the Deus Ex franchise in favor of spearheading a new Guardians of the Galaxy game for Marvel Entertainment.

Last week, Marvel announced a multi-game partnership with the developer’s parent company, Square Enix. The duo said they already had a number of new titles in development, starting with an Avengers game co-developed by Tomb Raider’s Crystal Dynamics and a small team from Eidos Montreal. Eurogamer reports that the rest of the former Deus Ex dev team will be focusing on a new, unannounced Guardians game that is still “in the early stages of production.”

Eurogamer claims that not only were the remaining and unresolved story threads left from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided meant to be tied up in another sequel, but that much of the story content originally meant for Mankind Divided had to be cut thanks to the game’s scope growing too large. Those plot points were meant to find a home in the following sequel. That theoretical entry in the now “on hiatus” franchise would supposedly have been the final chapter in the prequel trilogy begun by 2011’s Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

In other Marvel videogame news, Telltale Games have their own Guardians of the Galaxy title scheduled for release this year. It’s rumored to come out during late spring, right around when James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to premiere in early May.
