Every month PlayStation Plus subscribers can download a handful of videogames for free. You have to be a subscriber, so they’re not completely free, but it is one of the better perks of signing up for Sony’s service. Some are only playable on the PlayStation 4, some for the PlayStation 3 and some for the Vita, but occasionally some are unlockable on all three devices with a single download. This month features one of the best reviewed new games of the summer and a handful of deep cuts from Sony’s ample library. If you’re wondering what’s worth the download, you’ve come to the right place.

6. Entwined (PS3, PS4, Vita): A tube shooter without the shooting, Entwined is a New Age videogame with a beautifully minimal aesthetic and a focus on romance. That right there makes me want to rush out and play this game. I have played it, though, and the central conceit of reuniting two beloved spirits is failed by a game design that fails to ever be fun or exciting. It's a high-minded Tempest, but kind of dull.

5. Geometry Wars 3 (Vita): As you twirl your thumbs across the joysticks to glide and shoot your way through Geometry Wars 3, you might find yourself feeling unfulfilled. The game's stuck between two seemingly contradictory spots: it's both too much like the previous games and yet, when it tries to be different, it loses the spark that made those older games so great. It's too different but not different enough.

4. Rain (PS3): Rain is a bit of a beautiful bummer, like real rain sometimes can be. A stealth game built around avoiding the constant downpour, Rain is the kind of game where single misstep results in instant death. The atmosphere is unique enough to warrant a free download, but expect to be frustrated.

3. Styx: Master of Shadows (PS4): Another stealth game, Styx doesn't feel as hollow as Rain, with more to do and more ways to do it. It also doesn't have as memorable a setting, though, or such sharp art design. Still, you might be actually be able to tolerate playing it for more than a few minutes at a time.

2. MouseCraft (PS3, PS4, Vita): This charming trifle riffs on a number of classic puzzle games (Lemmings, Tetris) and just barely ekes out its own identity. It's a stylish little diversion worth a download.

1. Rocket League (PS4): Just go read our review from earlier this week. This mash-up of soccer and remote controlled cars is a raucous blitz of pure adrenaline, and some of the most fun you'll find in games.
