<i>Hidden Figures</i>, <i>Frozen 2</i> Writer Allison Schroeder to Pen <i>Minecraft</i> Movie

The Minecraft movie is adding a new architect to its sandbox.

The Minecraft movie adaptation has been in its gestation period for years, but now it looks like it’s finally moving onto a new phase of production since Warner Bros. picked up the rights to it in 2014.

Warner Bros. has brought on Allison Schroeder, best-known for the 2016 feel-good historical drama Hidden Figures and Frozen 2, to pen the script, as THR first reported.

She’s the next in a line of writers for the movie, including Aaron and Adam Nee, known for Band of Robbers, and Wonder Woman screenwriter Jason Fuchs, who each wrote earlier drafts that it seems never quite kickstarted production.

But maybe things will be smoother sailing with Schroeder, who bagged an Oscar nomination for co-writing Hidden Figures. She’s also co-written the Winnie the Pooh flick Christopher Robin. Let’s just hope her script doesn’t get scrapped, too.

The Minecraft movie has also had a revolving door for directors, starting with Stranger Things director Shawn Levy dropping out. Warner Bros. later brought on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney, but he pulled out, too. Now they’ve got Peter Sollett, who directed Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist. Hopefully he’ll decide to stick around for a little longer.

The Minecraft movie is set to follow a teenage girl and her group of adventurers as they journey to defeat the evil Ender Dragon and save Overworld. Or at least that’s what the plot was years ago. Who knows what changes Schroeder may make in her new draft.

With a new writer and new director, maybe the Minecraft movie will finally make some headway toward its scheduled release on March 4, 2022. So far, there’s no word yet on casting, or whether the film will be live-action or animation.
