New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in December

Among everything else we have to look forward to as the holidays signal the coming of a new year, Amazon Prime Video is doing what streaming services do: Shuffling film and television titles into and out of its library. We’ve given Amazon’s December additions a good look—here’s what you need to catch while you can.

We’ll start with Amazon’s incoming movies, where we’ve got an early holiday surprise on our hands: A trio of foundational Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor, and 2012’s The Avengers—which we’ve ranked as the best MCU movie of all—are now streaming on Prime Video as of Nov. 12. Why these films weren’t announced along with the rest of the streamer’s November slate is beyond us, but they’re a welcome addition to the service nonetheless, particularly for viewers who haven’t taken the Disney+ plunge (resisting Baby Yoda’s siren song is a tall task, indeed). Elsewhere in film, we have titles like Cameron Crowe’s rock ‘n’ roll love letter Almost Famous, Martin Scorsese’s Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, 1984’s dance classic Footloose and Will Smith-starring superhero subversion Hancock, among others, all arriving on Dec. 1. Following later in the month are Joe Talbot’s acclaimed A24 drama The Last Black Man in San Francisco (Dec. 5), Julia Hart’s sci-fi family drama Fast Color (Dec. 11), Hailee Steinfeld-starring Transformers spinoff Bumblebee (Dec. 13), Vincent D’Onofrio-directed 2019 Western The Kid (Dec. 18), Amazon’s airborne Felicity Jones/Eddie Redmayne adventure The Aeronauts (in theaters Dec. 6 and streaming Dec. 20), this year’s Taraji P. Henson-starring What Men Want (Dec. 30) and 1999 bio-dramedy Man on the Moon (Dec. 31), starring Jim Carrey as singular funnyman Andy Kaufman.

Amazon’s TV slate has its fair share of exciting titles, as well, foremost among them the latest season of Amy Sherman-Palladino’s award-winning period dramedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Dec. 6). Season 3 of Amazon’s most-awarded original series ever—16 Emmys, 3 Golden Globes, 5 Critics Choice and 3 SAG Awards are nothing to sneeze at—finds Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and Susie (Alex Borstein) discovering that life on tour with Shy is glamorous but humbling, learning a lesson about show business they’ll never forget. Meanwhile, Joel (Michael Zegen) struggles to support Midge while pursuing his own dreams, Abe (Tony Shalhoub) embraces a new mission, and Rose (Marin Hinkle) learns she has talents of her own. Also much-anticipated is Season 4 of a lesser-known, but just as engrossing series: sci-fi epic The Expanse (Dec. 13), an overlooked gem Amazon scooped up for a fourth season after it was axed by Syfy. The show’s new chapter straps in alongside the crew of the Rocinante as they embark on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. And don’t overlook The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show (Nov. 29), a new special from the eponymous Grammy-winning singer-songwriter, who’ll deliver her stylish and “magically modern” take on a Christmas special with the help of an eye-popping assemblage of special guests, including Lana Del Rey, Fred Armisen, Leon Bridges, Zooey Deschanel and the Radio City Rockets.

Miscellaneous Amazon offerings on tap for December fans include the Dec. 5 and 12 installments of Thursday Night Football, as well as various film and TV titles available via Prime Video Channels, with new offerings from Showtime, Starz, Epix and PBS Masterpiece, among others.
