There’s a good month ahead for Amazon Prime Video subscribers, who’ll soon have access to an attractive batch of streaming feature film and television titles coming to the streaming service’s library in February. Follow along and we’ll walk you through the highlights, though if you’d rather just scroll down for the complete list, we won’t judge you.
We’re particularly excited about Amazon’s film additions, which include one of Paste’s top movies of 2019: The Farewell (Feb. 12), writer-director Lulu Wang’s poignant family dramedy starring a Golden Globe-winning Awkwafina as the Chinese-born, U.S.-raised Billi, who returns home to Changchun to find that her family’s beloved matriarch, Nai Nai (Zhao Shuzhen), has only weeks to live. Rather than telling Nai Nai this devastating news, the family gathers on the pretense of an expedited wedding, uniting their many far-flung members to celebrate Nai Nai’s life—to bid her farewell. (Yeah, you’re gonna cry.) Another standout addition is Amazon original Honey Boy (Feb. 7), the feature screenwriting debut of one Shia Labeouf, who also stars in the Alma Har’el-directed drama as a fictionalization of his own father, while Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges portray versions of Labeouf at different stages of his life. Elsewhere in incoming films, we have quite a few Feb. 1 arrivals, like Warren Beatty’s Oscar-winning detective caper Dick Tracy, iconic Patrick Swayze/Demi Moore romance Ghost, Steven Soderbergh’s acclaimed male stripper dramedy Magic Mike, Gabourey Sidibe-starring Oscar winner Precious, Nicolas Cage-led arms dealer drama Lord of War, beloved British rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary and 1983 stoner comedy Cheech & Chong’s Still Smokin’ (which, fun fact, somehow has a Metascore of 4. Not a typo!). And following those titles later in the month are 2012 horror-comedy mind-bender The Cabin in the Woods (Feb. 3), shark attack survival-horror sequel 47 Meters Down: Uncaged (Feb. 16) and nostalgic J.J. Abrams adventure Super 8 (Feb. 18), among others.
As for TV, what Amazon’s February slate lacks in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality. The most notable addition of all? Easy: New Amazon original series Hunters (Feb. 21), starring Oscar winner Al Pacino, executive produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele and created by David Weil. Pacino stars as Meyer Offerman, the leader of an eclectic band of Nazi hunters living in 1977 New York City. Upon discovering that hundreds of escaped Nazis are living among us in the United States and conspiring to create a Fourth Reich, they do what any badass vigilante squad would do, setting out on a bloody quest for revenge and justice. Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton, Josh Radnor, Kate Mulvany, Tiffany Boone, Greg Austin, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Dylan Baker and Lena Olin also star in what looks to be one of this winter’s splashiest new shows. Not to be overlooked, also, are a pair of acclaimed 2019 titles making their Amazon streaming debuts: Seasons 1 and 2 of Starz series Counterpart and Season 1 of Showtime limited series Escape at Dannemora, both of which hit Prime Video on Feb. 1. The former show, canceled last February, is a sci-fi thriller starring J.K. Simmons as a spy who discovers his organization is hiding a gateway to an alternate dimension (in which a far deadlier version of him lives), while the latter is an Emmy-nominated, Ben Stiller-directed drama based on the strange but true story of a 2015 New York state jailbreak in which two dangerous prisoners convinced a female corrections officer to help them escape. Football fans have another addition to anticipate, as well: All or Nothing: The Philadelphia Eagles (Feb. 7), the fifth season of Amazon’s Emmy-winning original sports docuseries, which follows the 2018 Super Bowl champions. And Prime Video Channels users can access the usual raft of pay-cable programming from Showtime, Starz and so on, given the proper subscriptions.
