As we all-too-rapidly approach 2018’s halfway point, another month of spring brings us another batch of new feature films and TV series headed to Amazon Prime Video, among other streaming services. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to break down Amazon’s May slate for you, so keep on scrolling to see the highlights, followed by the full list.
In the feature film department, Amazon’s biggest incoming addition is the latest film from five-time Oscar nominee Richard Linklater, the acclaimed military dramedy Last Flag Flying. The film, based on Darryl Ponicsan’s 2005 novel of the same name, follows three Vietnam War veterans—played by a trio of Oscar nominees in Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne—who reunite after 30 years, embarking on a bittersweet road trip so they can bury a young Marine who was killed in the Iraq War. Last Flag Flying, Linklater’s first film since 2016’s Everybody Wants Some!!, streams on Prime beginning on May 4. Preceding it on the first of the month are Steven Spielberg’s misunderstood masterpiece A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Al Gore’s 2006 climate change documentary An Inconvenient Truth (memorably mocked as “apocalypse porn” in a recent episode of HBO’s Silicon Valley), Kevin Costner-starring baseball classic Bull Durham, a number of James Bond films (including Dr. No, Goldfinger and Thunderball), 1974’s original Murder on the Orient Express, Sylvester Stallone-starring boxing classics Rocky I-V and Kathryn Bigelow’s 2010 Best Picture winner The Hurt Locker, among many others. And following later in May are last year’s swing-and-miss of a Baywatch reboot on May 12, the very funny Ken Marino’s feature directorial debut How to Be a Latin Lover on May 15, intimate political drama Beatriz at Dinner on May 19 and Daniel Radcliffe-starring drug smuggler crime drama Beast of Burden on May 23. And those of you who rent movies through Amazon Video—or avail yourselves of Prime Video Channels, for that matter—have still more enticing options, including Studio Ghibli successor Studio Ponoc’s debut film Mary and the Witch’s Flower, Alex Garland’s unsung modern sci-fi classic Annihilation, Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning war epic Dunkirk, popular (that’s the kindest adjective we’ve got) romantic drama Fifty Shades Freed and HBO’s Michael B. Jordan-starring Fahrenheit 451 adaptation, just to name a couple.
As for the small screen, May brings five original shows to Amazon, including the the first season of Spanish-language drama series Diablo Guardian, adapted from Xavier Velasco’s novel of the same name, on May 5, season 1A of kids comedy Rocky & Bullwinkle on May 11, the sophomore season of cyber-crime drama You Are Wanted on May 18, the second season of dinosaur-centric family series Dino Dana on May 22 and the debut of Natalie Dormer-starring (Game of Thrones) limited series Picnic at Hanging Rock on May 25. The service is also making a handful of noteworthy licensed TV additions, including the fifth and final season of BBC America’s Orphan Black, starring the outstanding Tatiana Maslany as a dozen of her own clones, and the first season of Starz period drama Howards End, a Hayley Atwell-starring limited series adapted from E. M. Forster’s 1910 novel of the same name. And those of you subscribed to Starz or Showtime can use Amazon Channels to catch the debuts of two new Starz drama series, Sweetbitter and Vida, on May 6, as well as Showtime’s second season of I’m Dying Up Here on May 6 and their new five-part limited series Patrick Melrose, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the title character, on May 12. Last but not least in Channels fare, the beloved Little Women premieres via PBS Masterpiece on May 14.
