New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in June

The midpoint of 2018 is approaching far faster than it has any right to, and with it comes another tall stack of film and TV titles newly streaming on your service of choice. Amazon is adding a number of noteworthy feature films and TV shows to its library in June, and you can find out which ones on this very website. Let’s get into it.

Amazon’s new movies come first, namely because they are adding a handful of must-sees, including two of Paste’s top films of 2017. First and foremost is Greta Gerwig’s lovely Lady Bird, a Sacramento-set coming-of-age dramedy starring Saoirse Ronan as headstrong high-schooler Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (pictured above) and Laurie Metcalf as her “warm, but … also kind of scary” mother Marion—both actors were Oscar-nominated for their wonderful work in bringing to life the sometimes sweet, sometimes fraught mother-daughter relationship that serves as Lady Bird’s potent emotional core. In his review of the film for Paste, Kyle Turner called Gerwig’s work “nothing short of tremendous, a wise film about how two people deal with ambivalence. Without lettings its strings show or veering into bald-faced sentimentality, Lady Bird breaks the heart and lifts the spirit in miraculous ways.” It also comes to Amazon on June 3, so make a note, viewers. Preceding Lady Bird on June 1, though, is another Oscar-nominated film from A24: James Franco’s The Disaster Artist, in which the actor (who also directs) embodies singular filmmaker Tommy Wiseau, the mind behind what might be the modern age’s foremost “disasterpiece,” The Room. The biographical dramedy recounts the meeting of Franco’s Wiseau and Greg Sestero (Dave Franco), who endeavor to make their Hollywood dreams come true by making a movie so bad, it turned out to be brilliant. And also worth a special mention is Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s Leonardo DiCaprio-starring psychological thriller based on Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel of the same name. Though the film—which hits Amazon on June 26—disappointed critics upon its 2010 release, its taut suspense and surprising depth have earned it increased appreciation over the years, making it one of the more underrated entries in Scorsese’s storied filmography. Amazon’s June slate includes far more than those three films, of course: The first of the month brings romantic epic Doctor Zhivago, sci-fi thriller Event Horizon, all seven Leprechaun films, Gore Verbinski comedy Mousehunt, Jack Black-starring luchador comedy Nacho Libre, ‘90s cartoon-basketball classic Space Jam, Tim Burton’s 2007 take on Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Joe Dante’s Tom Hanks-starring cul-de-sac comedy The ‘Burbs, Oscar-nominated disco drama Saturday Night Fever and Amazon original Wonder Wheel, among many others. Films to follow later in the month include iconic 1994 sci-fi flick Stargate (June 3), Robert Redford’s star-studded Lions for Lambs (June 5), Oscar-winning 2009 drama Precious (June 9) and franchise blockbuster Transformers: The Last Knight (June 16).

On the TV side of things, Amazon’s additions include five Prime original series, as well as a handful of popular licensed shows. One undated title is the first season of A Very English Scandal, which tells “the shocking true story of the first British politician to stand trial for conspiracy and incitement to murder,” per Amazon. Hugh Grant—in his first television role since the early ‘90s—plays disgraced MP Jeremy Thorpe, who was tried and acquitted in 1979 of conspiring to murder his ex-lover Norman Scott, played by Ben Whishaw. While that series will make its indeterminate debut sometime in June, the first of the month brings the first season of Amazon’s original sports docuseries All or Nothing: New Zealand All Blacks, which goes behind the scenes for a season with the famed, eponymous rugby team, as well as the complete collections of three licensed shows: seasons one through five of Emmy-winning sci-fi series Babylon 5, seasons one through seven of Denis Leary-starring firefighter drama Rescue Me and season one through nine of Golden Globe-winning family series The Waltons. Season 1B of Amazon original Lost in Oz, a Daytime Emmy-winning, animated twist on the timeless tale of The Wizard of Oz, debuts on June 8, followed by the second season of Golden Globe-winning Amazon original crime drama Goliath, starring Billy Bob Thornton as antihero attorney Billy McBride, on June 15. Season seven of USA Network hit series Suits debuts on June 18, with the subsequent premiere of season 1B of Amazon original children’s series If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, based on the beloved kids book of the same name, wrapping things up on June 26. And those of you who use Amazon Channels can catch new seasons of a couple of pay-cable prestige dramas, including the debut of HBO’s Succession on June 3, season three of Showtime’s Billions on June 10 and season two of HBO’s Westworld on June 24.
