New on Amazon Prime Video: All the Movies and TV Coming in April

We’re nearly into April now, the quarter mark of a no-longer-new year, and this upcoming month brings a fresh set of feature film and television titles to, among other streaming services, Amazon Prime Video.

On the movie side, Prime subscribers have a handful of classics to look forward to, as well as a 2018 standout or two. The bulk of April’s film additions fall on April 1, the arguable highlight of which is 1994 Stephen King adaptation The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as two imprisoned men who come to form an unlikely bond. The Frank Darabont-directed drama, generally deemed one of the best King adaptations ever made, was nominated for seven Oscars and added to the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2015, so maybe see the dang thing if you haven’t before. Arriving alongside Shawshank on April 1 are Tim Burton’s beloved occult comedy Beetlejuice, classic 1974 detective drama Chinatown, cult sci-fi comedy Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (soon to receive a sequel), Oscar-nominated seafaring drama The Perfect Storm, John Carpenter’s Snake Plissken adventure Escape from L.A., live-action Addams Family films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, a pair of Tony Scott heaters in Top Gun and Days of Thunder, star-studded Anne Rice adaptation Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles, Cheech & Chong’s stoner-comedy classic Up in Smoke, the Wesley Snipes-starring Bladetrilogy, Jason Reitman’s Oscar-nominated romantic dramedy Up in the Air, Beverly Hills Cop II (you’ll have to stream the first one elsewhere) and a whole bunch of Bond films. And those films are followed later in the month by, among other titles, two of 2018’s most noteworthy directorial debuts: John Krasinski’s acclaimed horror-thriller A Quiet Place (April 2) and Jonah Hill’s ‘90s-era L.A.-set drama Mid90s (April 18).

Moving on into TV, Amazon has two Prime originals returning for new seasons in April, one of which is just getting going, and the other of which has already been around the block a time or two. The former is superhero action-comedy series The Tick, which returns for its second season on April 5—now that Tick (Peter Serafinowicz) and Arthur (Griffin Newman) have made their city “safe enough to protect,” the duo must defend it from new villains and old enemies alike, while also dealing with some newfound competition; the latter is Bosch, which begins its fifth season on April 19—L.A.P.D. detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch (Titus Welliver), having brought a family member’s killer to justice, now has new problems to deal with, including suspicious new evidence arising in an old case and a murder at a Hollywood pharmacy that sends Bosch down a darker, more dangerous path. Other TV debuts of note include season three of AMC sci-fi series Humans on April 27 and season five of History drama series Vikings on April 30. Two other Prime originals debut new seasons on April 12, with children’s series Bug Diaries making its debut and Diablo Guardian, a drama series based on Xavier Velasco’s award-winning 2003 novel of the same name, returning for season two. And Prime Video Channels users with the requisite subscriptions can catch the debut season of Jordan Peele’s Twilight Zone reboot via CBS All Access (April 1), season two of Showtime’s The Chi (April 7), and the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones via HBO (April 14), as well as live sports including the NCAA Final Four (April 6) and National Championship (April 8), and the PGA Masters (April 13).
