Movie adaptations of videogames don’t exactly have the strongest track record, but they keep making them anyway. The latest in this line is Assassin’s Creed, which just debuted a new trailer. In the trailer, Jeremy Irons gives us all the exposition we could ever need, explaining that there’s a magic orb that Michael Fassbender has to retrieve.
Of course, in order to complete the mission, Fassbender has to travel back in time to the era of the Spanish Inquisition, and things inevitably get complicated once he arrives there. The trailer also serves as an excellent reminder that Assassin’s Creed has a slew of thespians in it. In addition to Fassbender and Irons, there’s also Marion Cotillard, Brendan Gleeson, Michael K. Williams, Charlotte Rampling and Essie Davis.
Directed by Justin Kurzel, Assassin’s Creed is set to hit theaters on Dec. 21. Until then, you can listen to Irons’ soothing tones as he pontificates on the nature of evil in the trailer above. Find the previous two trailers here and here.
