Black Panther Teaser Reels in 89 Million Views in First 24 Hours

After making its debut during game four of the NBA Finals, the first Black Panther teaser trailer garnered 89 million views within 24 hours of its release.

Fans have been hyped about the news of a stand-alone film for the African superhero for a while now, especially following his appearance in Captain America: Civil War in 2016. The teaser trailer, which you can revisit below, served as the first real look into the film.

Director Ryan Coogler based the film on the newest comic adaptation of the Marvel hero, written by award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates.

While we have already seen Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the teaser gave the first look at the rest of the cast in costume, including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Forest Whitaker, Daniel Kaluuya, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba and Letitia Wright. The trailer also serves as insight into the futuristic Wakanda, the fictional African nation over which T’Challa reigns as king.

With 89 million views (including 19 million from NBA Finals viewers), the trailer earned its spot as Marvel’s third-most-watched trailer, following just behind Thor: Ragnarok and Captain America: Civil War. The trailer also cracked the top ten most-watched trailers in 24 hours of any film, per THR.

The teaser was also pretty much all anyone was talking about on Twitter after its debut, overshadowing even the NBA championship game it premiered during, with 349,000 mentions within 24 hours and starting the hashtag #BlackPantherSoLit.

Black Panther hits theaters Feb. 16, 2018.
