During Monday’s National Championship game between Alabama and Georgia, Marvel Studios unleashed the TV spot for next month’s release of Black Panther.
The action-packed trailer shows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) coming home to his throne left vacant by his deceased father. The clip alludes to the inevitable showdown for the Wakanda throne between T’Challa and Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) as Killmonger elicits Ulysses Klaue’s (Andy Serkis) help in taking control of the isolated South African kingdom. The audience gets a preview of Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia and Danai Gurira’s Okoye in action as Black Panther’s bodyguards, along with Forest Whitaker’s Zuri and Letitia Wright’s Shuri. Along with showcasing the film’s all-star cast, the trailer features a new collaboration between Kendrick Lamar and Vince Staples—Lamar is producing the film’s soundtrack, the lead single from which he performed during last night’s National Championship, just before the Black Panther spot aired.
The TV spot served another purpose, as well, as it announced the availability of pre-sale tickets before the Ryan Coogler-directed film arrives in theaters on Feb. 16.
