Watch the Heartbreaking First Trailer for Joel Edgerton's Boy Erased

The first full trailer for Joel Edgerton’s conversion therapy drama Boy Erased was released Tuesday via Focus Features.

The film stars Lucas Hedges (Lady Bird) as Jared, who at 19 is outed to his parents. His father (Russell Crowe), his small town’s resident Baptist preacher, and his mother (Nicole Kidman) present him with an impossible choice: Jared can either attend conversion therapy, or be exiled from his family and faith. Jared enrolls in a conversion program (led by a therapist played by Edgerton), and as he struggles to decide what he believes to be right or wrong, the resulting trailer is heartbreaking.

Boy Erased is based on Garrard Conley‘s memoir Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family, and the film is Edgerton’s directorial follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2015 debut The Gift.
