The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has announced their nominees for this year’s Golden Globes, and they’re … pretty strange?
Aside from the whole kerfuffle over classifying Jordan Peele’s horror masterwork Get Out as a comedy, the Globes have come out with surprising love for things like The Greatest Showman, SMILF, Will & Grace and Downsizing. It would have been impossible to predict some of these picks, though that didn’t stop us trying.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that the fact that Christopher Plummer is nominated for All the Money in the World is a good and funny thing, a slap in the face to the very memory of Kevin Spacey. “Wow, what a great role this is!” The HFPA seems to say. “Good thing it wasn’t a sexual predator playing it!”
But the star of the show is Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, which led the film pack with seven nominations, with a nominee in most of the major motion picture categories. If you had told us even a month ago that a movie about having sex with a fish man was going to be the awards-season favorite, we probably would not have believed you. But we’re very happy that it is.
