Push pause on all the Halloween hoopla, because here, midway through the month of October, it’s time to look ahead to November and the entertainment bounty it brings to Hulu. The greenest of all streaming services has an impressive feature film slate on the way, as has become typical, plus some noteworthy TV additions. Let’s get into it all, shall we?
Movies are where the magic happens on Hulu this November, with no more delightful addition on the way than cult Coen Brothers crime-comedy The Big Lebowski. Words like “quirky” applied to films of this ilk are often backhanded compliments, but quirky characters are what make The Big Lebowski’s world go round, from Jeff Bridges as its perpetually stoned amateur detective protagonist Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski, to John Goodman as belligerent Vietnam vet Walter Sobchak, to a fully committed Julianne Moore as mysterious artist Maude Lebowski, to David Huddleston as the eponymous Big Lebowski. The endlessly quotable cult-classic comes to Hulu on the first of November, as do Danny Boyle’s hugely influential zombie thriller 28 Days Later, cult anthology comedy Four Rooms (anchored by star Tim Roth, and featuring segments directed by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino), Oscar-nominated basketball classic Hoosiers, Nic Cage-starring arms dealer drama Lord of War, Steven Soderbergh’s 2000s crime-caper trilogy Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, and Werner Herzog’s 2006 Vietnam war epic Rescue Dawn. Further film additions on the way include Stephen Chbosky’s heartwarming hit drama Wonder (Nov. 2), Matthew Vaughn’s gritty comic adaptation Kick-Ass (Nov. 3), Sharlto Copley-starring space-exploration thriller Europa Report (Nov. 7), Disney’s Oscar-winning animated adventure Big Hero 6 (Nov. 10), a towering pile of Christmas movies (Nov. 15) and Alexander Payne’s satirical sci-fi dramedy Downsizing (Nov. 24), among others.
Hulu’s television slate for next month is led by a pair of shows, once licensed and the other original. The former is FX’s acclaimed comedy Baskets, whose third season debuts on Nov. 23—the Emmy-winning show stars Zach Galifianakis as down-on-his-luck clown Chip Baskets (as well as his twin brother Dale) and Louie Anderson in a remarkable turn as Baskets family matriarch Christine—while the latter is Hulu’s own horror event series Into The Dark, which returns for a second episode on Nov. 2. The innovative anthology, produced in partnership with horror powerhouse Blumhouse’s television arm, debuts in monthly installments, each tied to and inspired by a holiday: November’s Thanksgiving episode, “Flesh & Blood,” centers on Kimberly (newcomer Diana Silvers), an agoraphobic teenager who has not left her home since her mother’s still-unsolved murder. While under her doting father’s (Dermot Mulroney) care on Thanksgiving eve, Kimberly starts to suspect she is in danger, and that it’s always the ones we love who hurt us the most. Into the Dark got off on the wrong foot to “embarrassingly bad” effect with October’s “The Body,” per Paste TV’s Jacob Oller, so here’s hoping the second installment is an improvement. Also inbound in November are all eleven seasons of family sitcom Married With Children (Nov. 9), season one of six-part Hulu original dramedy The Bisexual (Nov. 16) and season one of Hulu original kids series Holly Hobbie (Nov. 16).
On our way out, we’ll take stock of all the titles Hulu loses when November ends. Nov. 30 sees the departure of Christian Bale-led Bret Easton Ellis adaptation American Psycho (and its 2002 sequel), late-’90s creature feature Anaconda, John Carpenter’s sci-fi-actioner Escape From New York, acclaimed comedy-thriller Get Shorty (and its less-acclaimed 2005 sequel Be Cool), Oscar-nominated legal thriller Primal Fear, James Cameron’s iconic sci-fi-thriller The Terminator, Robin Williams-starring Oscar winner What Dreams May Come and acclaimed early-’90s drama What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (for which a young Leonardo DiCaprio, co-starring opposite Johnny Depp, earned his first Oscar nod). Adjust your watchlist accordingly while the getting’s good.
