Grab a cup of tea and buckle up: A new trailer for The King’s Man has arrived. The film is a prequel to the first installments of the Kingsman series, The Secret Service and The Golden Circle, with all of them being based on the comic book series Kingsman by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. As The King’s Man is set at the beginning of the 20th century, you won’t find any high-tech umbrellas or decked-out jets in this trailer. The prequel is about the Kingsman organization’s humble beginnings: as humble as you can be in a three-piece suit and shined shoes.
The trailer contains the detailed, fast-paced fight scenes that made the first Kingsman so watchable, while stars Ralph Fiennes and Harris Dickinson have the same father-son-like bond that Colin Firth and Taron Egerton had in The Secret Service. As for the enemy, it’s not exactly clear how many—or who—they are. Ominous figures look over laboratories of minions wearing gas masks and tinkering with devices of destruction that are reminiscent of “Dr. Poison” from Wonder Woman. The film seems to hint that these villainous masterminds are responsible for WWI, which would take the film into a realm of historical fiction that may be hard to pull off. Despite the historical realism, there’s plenty of explosions and rock music that define the Kingsman style: James Bond if he didn’t take himself so seriously.
Although you won’t see familiar faces from the previous installments on screen, Matthew Vaughn, writer and director for the first two Kingsman films, is back behind the camera for the prequel. Vaughn is also producing the film alongside David Reid and Adam Bohling. The full cast includes Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Dickinson, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou and Charles Dance.
The King’s Man is set for release on Feb. 14, 2020. Watch the trailer below.
