The first mother! teaser mostly gave us a bunch of disembodied, increasingly terrifying dialogue superimposed over a meandering Jennifer Lawrence. The film’s full trailer, however, shows the actual corresponding footage, and it’s terrifying.

It’s honestly the music that sells everything here. Darren Aronofsky fills the trailer with the kind of twisted visuals we’ve come to expect from the Black Swan director—here lightbulbs fill with blood and explode, a living room rapidly decays to a burned out husk without any visible fire, etc.—but the accompanying music is utterly chilling. It’s sparse, arhythmic and perfectly synchronized to the onscreen visuals. Much of the musical weight is carried by a single stringed instrument (a cello?) seemingly played by an escaped asylum inmate and a demented percussion section.

The film itself seems like a perfectly competent supernatural horror film, and Lawrence agrees. She spends a decent amount of the trailer screaming at the top of her lungs and asking breathless questions of every character as her desire for a quiet, utopian household swiftly collapses around her.

Just watch the terrifying trailer above. It’ll make more sense that way. And look for the film to soil the pants of theater-goers Sept. 15.
