Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to Charlie McDowell’s film, The Discovery, set to premiere on the streaming site and in select U.S. theaters in 2017, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The film, written by McDowell and Justin Lader, takes place one year after a scientist (Robert Redford) confirms that there is an afterlife. The scientist’s son, Will (Jason Segel), falls in love with Isla (Rooney Mara), who is haunted by past tragedies. The Discovery also stars Jesse Plemons, Riley Keough and Ron Canada.
“To describe the story as original doesn’t begin to capture the world that Charlie has created that will envelop you,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told THR. “Our global viewers are going to love this film.”
McDowell made his directorial debut in 2014 with the mysterious and fantastic The One I Love.
