New on Netflix: All the Movies and TV Coming in June

Every month is a massive one in terms of additions to the big red streaming service named Netflix, but June boasts a particularly impressive set of incoming feature films and TV shows. It’s only fitting that, the hotter it gets outside, the more excuses we streamers all have to stay indoors—read on for our breakdown of the best Netflix has to offer next month.

As you may have guessed from the delightful image above, there are a couple of super movies headed to Netflix in June, arguably none of which are more exciting than Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 17th entry (and Paste’s 17th-ranked film of last year), featuring the brawny Chris Hemsworth in its title role, is undeniably one of its most fun—our own Michael Burgin deemed it “the liveliest, funniest and ‘loosest’ film of the bunch” in his review, highlighting Waititi’s contributions in particular. While Thor: Ragnarok streams on Netflix starting on June 5, another enormous addition waits in the wings until June 26: Rian Johnson’s polarizing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, another one of Paste’s top film picks of 2017. The eighth episode in Star Wars’ central Skywalker saga, The Last Jedi divided fans of the franchise, but delighted the majority of critics, including Paste’s Will Leitch, who lauded the film’s boldness in “[going] places no Star Wars film has ever dreamed of going.” That dynamic duo is only the start of Netflix’s June slate, which also features Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning crime epic The Departed (June 1), acclaimed Cate Blanchette-led drama Blue Jasmine (June 1), animated classic Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (June 1), dumb-fun Nicolas Cage-led adventure National Treasure (June 1), Best Picture-winning historical drama The King’s Speech (June 2), Heath Ledger’s final film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (June 15), Martin McDonagh’s Oscar-nominated 2008 crime dramedy In Bruges (June 16) and Disney’s Oscar-winning animated take on Tarzan (June 23), among others. And as ever, there’s a slew of Netflix original films inbound, including Love, Simon/Superbad hybrid Alex Strangelove on June 8, corporate rom-com Set It Up on June 15 and Chloë Grace Moretz-led psychological drama Brain on Fire on June 22.

Netflix’s June TV slate doesn’t exactly pale in comparison, either, as two acclaimed original shows will both return to the streamer for their second seasons, a much-anticipated new series will get rolling and a beloved fan favorite will conclude its run. We’re referring, of course, to: Marvel superhero series Luke Cage and Alison Brie-led ‘80s wrestling comedy GLOW, debuting their sophomore seasons on June 22 and 29, respectively; new topical comedy series The Break with Michelle Wolf, in which the Daily Show and Late Night with Seth Meyers alum unapologetically pokes fun at everyone and everything—which will sound familiar to those who caught her White House Correspondents’ Dinner performance in late April—streaming every Sunday starting on May 27, with another new episode on June 3; and Sense8, which will air its sweeping series finale on June 8 (natch) after a passionate fan push earned the canceled series one last hurrah. Other notable Netflix original series on the way in June include Nailed It! (June 29) and The Ranch (June 15), among others, while the streamer’s stand-out licensed TV additions are Portlandia season eight (June 10), Grey’s Anatomy season 14 (June 16) and season five of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on June 17. Don’t miss Netflix’s original comedy specials, either, including Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (June 19), in which Australian comic Gadsby rejects boilerplate stand-up by pairing punchlines with personal revelations, and W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro (June 26), in which activist and comedian Bell contemplates parenting in the Trump era, “free speech” conflicts, woke children’s TV and his fear of going off the grid.

Last and saddest is the list of titles leaving Netflix next month, though you can take comfort in knowing they’ll likely turn up on one of the many other streaming services soon, if they aren’t there already. Titles shuffling off the Netflix coil in June include Clint Eastwood-helmed J. Edgar Hoover biopic J. Edgar, sci-fi franchise flick Men in Black and Denzel Washington’s Oscar-winning career highlight Training Day on June 1, followed by the 2013 Bonnie & Clyde remake on June 10, Baz Luhrmann’s glitzy The Great Gatsby on June 15, Sin City sequel A Dame to Kill For on June 22 and unofficial Avengers movie Captain America: Civil War on June 25.
