The dog days of summer are upon us, and what better way to beat the heat than by staying indoors, eyes A Clockwork Orange-wide, taking in every second of streaming entertainment we can possibly cram into our skulls? Netflix has lined up some choice offerings for the month of June, including film and television highlights alike. Those are what the rest of this post is about.
It’s a big month for cinephiles, as Netflix’s feature film slate offers plenty to get excited about. The obvious highlight here is one of Paste’s tippy-top movies of 2018: visually stunning superhero smash-hit Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (June 26), which Paste Movies editor Michael Burgin lauded as “Amazing. Spectacular. Superior,” and “an instant contemporary animated classic” in his review of the film. Another of the foremost must-sees on Netflix’s June film list is Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese (June 12), “an alchemic mix of fact and fantasy” in which “Martin Scorsese looks back at Bob Dylan’s 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue tour and a country ripe for reinvention,” per Netflix. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, honestly, as Netflix is also adding a cavalcade of classics on June 1, including Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Steven Spielberg’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Oliver Stone’s Platoon, Sidney Lumet’s Network, Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike and many more. Following those films later in the month are Clarence Avant documentary The Black Godfather (June 7), Netflix original sci-fi thriller I Am Mother (June 7), Disney hit Ralph Breaks the Internet (June 11), Adam Sandler- and Jennifer Aniston-starring action-comedy Murder Mystery (June 14), Spider-Man director Jon Watts’ Kevin Bacon-led crime thriller Cop Car (June 16) and Netflix original hip-hop drama Beats (June 19), among others.
Netflix isn’t slacking in the TV department either, with perhaps its single most eye-catching small-screen addition in a while: beloved anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion (June 21), which arrives alongside a pair of Evangelion feature films, The End of Evangelion and EVANGELION: DEATH (TRUE)². The 26-episode mecha anime, streaming for the very first time since its 1995 debut, is set in the year 2015—protagonist Shinji Ikari is recruited to pilot a mecha, Evangelion, and fight to defend Tokyo 3 and humanity as a whole from powerful attackers, the alien Angels. Elsewhere in TV, June brings the debut of the third and final season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones (date TBA), season three of Bill Hader and Fred Armisen’s IFC comedy series Documentary Now!, the fifth season of twisty, technology-focused sci-fi series Black Mirror (June 5), Netflix’s new limited series adaptation of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City (June 7), Jo Koy comedy special Comin’ In Hot (June 12), season 15 (!) of long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy (June 15), Adam Devine comedy special Best Time of Our Lives (June 18), season two of German-language Netflix original supernatural mystery series Dark (June 21) and the fifth season of Téa Leoni-starring CBS political drama Madam Secretary (June 30). In other words, the age of Peak TV is alive and well on Netflix.
We’ll leave you with what’s leaving the streamer come June, as a number of quality titles are poised to exit stage wherever. On June 1, we lose Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, Friday the 13th, Legally Blonde, I Am Legend, Apollo 13, Pretty in Pink, Stargate, Disney’s 101 Dalmatians, The Constant Gardener and, most importantly, An Extremely Goofy Movie. Following those flicks off the platform later in the month are District 9 (June 4), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (June 5), Apocalypse Now (June 15), The Pianist (June 15), Death Race (June 16) and Disney’s Mulan 2 (June 24), which is apparently a movie that was made? At any rate, catch those ones while you can, gang.
