Anne Hathaway Reportedly Eyeing the Live-Action Sesame Street Movie

First of all: Who knew that there was a live-action Sesame Street movie on the way? Because there’s definitely a live-action Sesame Street movie coming, and that’s a pretty novel thought, for a series that first began in 1969. The legendary PBS series—now at home on HBO—gave us many of Jim Henson’s most famous creations, from Elmo and Oscar the Grouch to Cookie Monster, Big Bird and Bert/Ernie. And now, Anne Hathaway may be about to enter Sesame Street lore.

Variety is reporting that Hathaway has been offered a starring role in the film, but hasn’t yet made a final decision—she’s also apparently looking at another offer for Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches.

Regardless, the Sesame Street movie will be directed by Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel, and is described as a musical. That only makes sense, given Hathaway’s extensive experience with music, from Les Mis and beyond. It’s easy to see why she would be an obvious target for the film, which Warner Bros. is co-financing with MGM.

Hathaway, meanwhile, has had an eclectic few years, appearing in the summer hit Ocean’s 8 and 2016’s surprisingly devastating Colossal from director Nacho Vigalondo. She’s slated to appear in upcoming thriller Serenity and comedy The Hustle, and also worked recently on the Netflix drama The Last Thing He Wanted.

Although Hathaway appearing in The Witches would probably be interesting, we kind of hope she ends up anchoring Sesame Street. Rarely has any casting seemed like such a perfect fit.
