Watch the Tearjerking New Trailer for The Goldfinch

The Goldfinch’s first trailer got us pretty excited for the forthcoming adaptation of Donna Tartt’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. If you weren’t convinced by the trailer—or the movie’s placement on our list of exciting book-to-film adaptations—maybe the movie’s second trailer will sway you.

Set to a newly orchestrated version of The National’s “Terrible Love,” this trailer is a more implicitly tearjerking affair, setting up the film’s emotional stakes with careful cuts and loads of poignant voiceover. Split across two timelines, The Goldfinch follows Theo (played in adulthood by Ansel Elgort) reckoning with an ongoing mystery surrounding his mother’s death in a terrorist attack when he was 13. The titular goldfinch refers to the “one tangible piece of hope from that terrible day,” and presumably a key piece of a larger puzzle.

The Goldfinch also stars Nicole Kidman, Westworld’s Jeffrey Wright, Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Sarah Paulson (American Crime Story), Little Women’s Willa Fitzgerald, The Royal Tenenbaum’ Luke Wilson and more. Brooklyn’s John Crowley sits in the director’s chair, while perpetual favorite Roger Deakins takes on cinematography. It’ll hit theaters on Sept. 13.
