That’s code for, “He’s crazy talented, and everybody knows it but a wide swath of American moviegoers” (in Oldman’s case, because he actively avoids the Hollywood scene and is disinclined to choose film roles based on the marketability of the movie). It explains why, a mere 18 years after his devastating performance as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy, the stage-trained British actor hit it big in the U.S. as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. Now that he’s appeared in another wildly popular franchise, Christopher Nolan’s Batman/Dark Knight movies, and received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Americans are finally taking Gary Oldman siriusly.
