The Roles of a Lifetime: Sharon Stone

In the 1990 blockbuster Total Recall, Sharon Stone showed she was marquee material. Two years later, in the erotic thriller Basic Instinct, she showed more than that and became a star. It was the crotch shot heard ’round the world, yet the focus should have been on Stone’s terrific portrayal of a murderous sociopath. With some notable exceptions (Casino, The Quick and the Dead), many of her subsequent films were obvious attempts to capitalize on Basic Instinct’s notoriety. Now, as a star of Mothers and Daughters (in theaters May 6), Stone can enjoy one of the rare benefits of being a mature actress: Audiences show up to see her act.
