Michelle Williams to Star Alongside Tom Hardy in Venom Movie

Sony’s confusing Venom project, which is probably not (but perhaps still) connected to Marvel Studios’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, has some bona fide talent behind it. Tom Hardy will portray the titular anti-hero under the direction of Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), and Riz Ahmed is expected to be attached as a supporting role. Per Variety, the next star to enter the project is actress Michelle Williams.

Williams has been nominated for four Academy Awards for her work in Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week with Marilyn and Manchester by the Sea. We aren’t used to seeing the prestigious actress in genre films like Venom, with an exception being her role as Glinda the Good Witch in Oz the Great and Powerful (coincidentally directed by Spider-Man director Sam Raimi).

Variety describes her role as “district attorney and possibly Hardy’s love interest,” which comic book fans speculate to be the character of Ann Weying, a lawyer and ex-wife of Eddie Brock, the host of the Venom symbiote that Hardy is portraying. In one storyline in the comics, the character briefly takes on the symbiote to become “She-Venom.”

Williams will also be seen in Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, which recently released a trailer and will hit theaters on Dec. 8. 2017 is a busy year for the actress, as she will also appear in Wonderstruck (Oct. 20) and the P.T. Barnum biopic The Greatest Showman (Dec. 25).
