We’ve already seen a couple of trailers for X-Men: Apocalypse, so we know the general gist of it: Oscar Isaac plays an ancient, omnipotent god who recruits a number of mutants (including Michael Fassbender’s Magneto) to help him destroy the world, and the X-Men must rise up and stop him. Lots of mutants show up, and a fair number of them are probably going to die—after all, this has not been a franchise afraid to kill off superheroes.
What wasn’t so apparent until now, with the release of the film’s final trailer, was the role Jennifer Lawrence’s Raven/Mystique would play in the fracas. Last seen reconciling with Professor X in Days of Future Past, it looks now like she’s going to assume the mantle of leadership from him in Apocalypse, after the god’s power overwhelms him. The trailer gives us J-Law as we would have liked to see her in The Hunger Games: badass, determined and leading without a touch of the annoying teen angst that kept late-series Katniss Everdeen from being such a likable character.
X-Men: Apocalypse is out in theaters on May 27. Watch the trailer above, and make sure you stick around until the end. You might spot a familiar face (or set of adamantium claws, as it were).
