Canadian album-rock quintet Arkells stretched the walls of The Studio at Webster Hall to maximum capacity last week, regaling a full house with melodic tales of love, leather jackets and Drake’s Dad (no, really, they have a song about meeting the hip-hop mogul’s pop). The show, sponsored by Paste, marks one stop for the band before a stint opening for Frank Turner—they’ll also return to NYC on 10/15 for a gig alongside KONGOS.
The group—Max Kerman (vocals/guitar), Mike DeAngelis (vocals/guitar), Nick Dika (bass), Tim Oxford (drums/percussion) and Anthony Carone (vocals/keyboard/guitar)—blazed through a swath of its four-album catalogue before rushing to Toronto for Carone’s marriage the next day (congrats Anthony!) Also: an epic cover of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” Paste photographer/video maestro Brad shot the band during beers/pool before the show as well as during the performance.
