Bad Bad Hats wield the power to transform the most jaded listener into a smitten teenager. Vocalist/guitarist Kerry Alexander bears her heart through lilting ballads and pop gems, strewn throughout an excellent debut EP and an equally alluring long play. Her declaration “I wanna be the one who holds you / I wanna be the one who says goodnight” on the sobering “Things We Never Say” punctuates a line of songs that veer from sassy to playful and adoring without an ounce of cynicism. The young Minneapolis group recently trekked east for an intimate show at Baby’s All Right, where Paste photographer Sarah Midkiff caught some downtime with the band as well as their gig. Bad Bad Hats are currently on tour, concluding with a homecoming show on the 4th.
