Through two EPs, two LPs and one hell of a Donna Lewis cover, Australia export Betty Who has elevated dance pop into cooler, weirder frontiers. Debut album Take Me When You Go revels in airy ‘80s synth influences, but The Valley, released last month, isn’t afraid to dive into hip-hop beats and sonically altered vocal lines. Who’s confident, sculpted melodies remain forefront, leading the svelte production instead of vice versa. Live, the singer/songwriter complements her musical energy with two backup dancers and costume changes. Paste photographer DeShaun Craddock caught Betty Who’s sold-out show last Friday with opener Vérité—who will be the center of her own gallery in a few days. Betty Who will tour the US through mid May before starting a new leg in August.
