Blood Orange Says "Oui" to Powdered Wigs in New "Benzo" Video

Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange) reimagines an 18th-century French court as a gender-fluid chill sesh in the self-directed clip for “Benzo,” released Monday. The track appears on the musician’s latest mixtape—Angel’s Pulse, released with little warning last Friday, June 12.

“Benzo” is classic Blood Orange, a subtle mix of soft drums, muted horns and Hynes’ lovely tenor. It also pairs surprisingly well with the short video, in which the frequent Solange collaborator plays a cellist performing for a Versailles audience. Sprinkled in with the traditional Marie Antoinette imagery (powdered wigs, flowing lace, etc.) are decidedly modern touches: empty cartons of Chinese food, scrolling digital signs and a notable lack of white faces. It’s worth a look.
