Compare the Chvrches of today to the Chvrches of 2013: months before the release of debut album The Bones of What You Believe, the Glasgow trio was selling out concert halls on the strength of single “The Mother We Share.” Intensely focused and understandably cautious, Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty have since embraced their ascent with grace and joy. This transformation has never been more evident than on their recent tour behind sophomore LP Every Open Eye, wrapping up tomorrow. Mayberry parades up and down the stage, occasionally striking a goofy pose, Doherty flings his arms around his synth pad and Cook maintains a rhythmic zen whether on bass or sampler. They look like they’re having a hell of a lot of fun weaving infectious synth-pop for a live audience, possibly the outcome of levitating as animated characters under the art direction of Jamie McKelvie.
