“Happy Release Day Eve to me,” Josh Tillman proclaimed early in his sold-out show last night at the Roxy in West Hollywood. If you’re looking for humility, a concert from his on-stage persona, Father John Misty, is the wrong place to find it. That said, fans know the score and were treated to a frenzied, at times manic run through songs from his two albums, the new I Love You, Honeybear and Fear Fun. Tillman sang from the top of a bass drum and from the floor of the stage, often grabbing ladies in the audience to serenade them individually for a brief moment. The stages will be much bigger as the year progresses, and Father John Misty proved more than ready.
It should be noted that opener Guy Blakeslee, frontman of The Entrance Band, captivated with a 40-minute opening set from his recent album, Ophelia Slowly. Blakeslee, playing solo, utilized tools ranging from pre-recorded backing tracks to bells attached to his wrist, but really it was his quivering, earnest voice that won over the early-bird audience.
