On Jan. 23, 2017, 13-year-old Grace VanderWaal wandered into Paste Studio with a ukulele and a budding reputation as pop music’s next singing prodigy. Four months earlier, at age 12, she had won the 11th season of NBC’s America’s Got Talent by unleashing her stunning, smoky voice on a series of original songs. A debut EP, Perfectly Imperfect, quickly followed, collecting the AGT songs on one recording. At Paste, VanderWaal performed two of those songs, “Gossip Girl” and “I Don’t Know My Name,” with a wide-eyed frankness that somehow both accentuated and obfuscated her youth and inexperience. Her coup de grace, though, was a cover of Ed Sheeran’s “The A-Team,” which she played on the guitar for the very first time—that is, she was playing the guitar for the first time ever.

Vanderwaal’s session became the most-watched video in the history of Paste Studio. In November 2017, she released her full-length debut, Just the Beginning. Watch Grace VanderWall perform a stunning rendition of “The A-Team.”
