Live Photos: International Dance Pioneer Jain Shakes the Floors in Chicago

Jeanne Galice, better known as Jain, makes music that smiles. She assembles her 25 years of globetrotting and culture diving into romping, airy tunes that remain airborne from first note to last. Born in Paris, Jain spent her youth between Dubai, Congo and Abu Dhabi, instilling a deep love of African rhythm coupled with electronica. That collage of inspiration shines through every beat of her late 2015 debut LP, Zanaka, especially the deep grooves of “Lil Mama” and single “Come,” which she performed last February on Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Paste photographer Sarah Hess met up with Jain when she stopped by Subterranean in Chicago last week, inviting the sold-out crowd to jump with her—the entire floor shook like an earthquake. Jain wraps her US tour next week before hitting Europe for the rest of the summer.
