Lizzo’s show at the recent Daytrotter Downs festival was something worth talking about. The 26-year-old rapper/singer/Minnesota transplant isn’t a newcomer to the music scene. She’s worked with Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, opened for Sleater-Kinney and regularly adds social activist themes to her tracks. She was even included in our 9 Up-And-Coming Female Rappers list last year.
Her sound is diverse, with a Missy Elliott feel in her raps mixed with a soulful Erykah Badu-raspiness in her singing. Her latest release, 2015’s Big Grrrl Small World, is a representation of a body-positive message she’s been sending since her 2014 single “Let ‘Em Say” with Carolina Strong. Lizzo is a total dynamo, and it doesn’t look like she is going to let anything get in her way until she’s comfortably on top.
