Megan Thee Stallion Doesn’t Know When She Can Release New Music

According to Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion, the future of her debut album Suga remains unclear due to a contract she signed with the indie label 1501 Certified nearly five years ago.

In an Instagram Live video shared on Sunday, March 1, the rapper admitted that she didn’t really understand what was in her contract when she first signed to 1501, and only when she signed a management deal with Roc Nation in September were some of the limitations brought to her attention: “When I got with Roc Nation, I got management—real management—I got real lawyers and they was like, ‘Do you know that this s in your contract?’ I was like, ‘Oh, damn, that’s crazy. No, I didn’t know.”

According to Megan Thee Stallion, she didn’t go to 1501 with the intentions of severing ties, just to renegotiate the limiting aspects of her contract: “Soon as I said, ‘I want to renegotiate my contract,’ everything went left,” Megan said during the Instagram live stream. “Like, it just all went bad. It all went left. So now they’re tellin’ a bitch that she can’t drop no music. It’s really just like a greedy game.”

1501’s refusal to renegotiate the contract and Megan’s iron will to change the terms have the two in a standoff that is resulting in the standstill of the artist’s ability to drop new music.

Suga had a May 2 release date, but that now remains up in the air. The date the album would drop is particularly important to Megan Thee Stallion, as it was intentionally scheduled to be released on her mom’s birthday.
