“Dreaming Of,” the debut single from rising U.K. songwriter Phoebe Green, got the pastel-infused video treatment on Tuesday morning.
In front of funhouse mirrors, Green reflects on a failed relationship; “Erased your name from on my phone / But I’m terrified of being alone / I would if I could,” she sings, yearning. But “Dreaming Of” isn’t all melancholy, choosing to build toward a more positive resolution amid the uncertainty. Using the song’s power-pop chorus to move Green to a colorfully cloudy set with her band, she sings of refusing to compromise for the sake of her partner’s unrealistic ideals.
By the end of the video, Green sings the refrain, “this wasn’t what I was dreaming of,” with a smile, a knowing smirk that looks toward the future, as she jams with her pals. “Dreaming Of” feels like learning to move on.
